The term "Third Place" comes from a book by Ray Oldenburg, The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffeeshops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community.
Oldenburg noted that people seem to have three significant places in their lives, with the first two beinghome and work. The third place is where they rub elbows with their friends and expand their social circle. The third place helps to strengthen the community, bringing myriad benefits to those who live there.
