DESCRIPTION
Barcelona's newest botanical garden, opened in 1999, sits on 33 acres of an old solid waste landfill site on Montjuic. Since the garden sits on a steep slope, the traditional square grid of a botanical garden has been warped into a series of triangles laid overtop the natural topography.
The garden's network of triangles represents the entire Mediterranean climates with 72 plant communities. The areas in the garden are split up into the following regions: Australia, Chile, California, South Africa and the Mediterranean which includes Eastern Mediterranean, Balearic Islands, North Africa, Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. The plants are organized in the same manner as they would appear in their native environment.
