Public ArtDESCRIPTION The project of Kogarah town square has won 11 design and planning awards for sustainability and environmental efficiency. This project clearly shows that designing to high standards of energy efficiency and water conservation is always synonym of success.
The buildings in Kogarah Town Square have its entire roof covered in light sensitive modules. The solar panels provide power to the public and retail spaces, with the excess power going into the grid with a rebate for the development’s residents. A peak 160kW of solar power is generated, with a saving of 143 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. It is also introduced an innovative water management program at Kogarah Town Square that sets new standards in environmental conservation of water.
The program is designed to deliver a saving of 42 percent in mains water supply, via a combination of recycling and efficiency measures. This water sensitive design provides an integrated water management system that addresses the multiple objectives of stormwater treatment, flood control, stormwater harvesting and use. 85% of the 8,230 kilolitres of rainwater falls on the site annually is captured and used; 60% is used to flush toilets and the remainder to irrigate the gardens in the courtyards of the development; and 25% of the water collected passes through the gardens and is purified and stripped of most of the nutrients it contains.
This project is also focused on high density population and liveability, trying to maximizing the feeling of accessibility, interaction and diversity at street level.
