TrailDESCRIPTIONThe High Line is a 1.45-mile (2.33km) New York City park built on a section of the former elevated freight railroad of the West Side Line, along the lower west side of Manhattan. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. Section 1 of the High Line, which opened to the public on June 9, 2009, runs from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street.
The High Line was originally constructed in the 1930s, to lift dangerous freight trains off Manhattan's streets. Section 1 of the High Line is open as a public park, owned by the City of New York and operated under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Friends of the High Line is the conservancy charged with raising private funds for the park and overseeing its maintenance and operations, pursuant to an agreement with the Parks Department.
The park combines meandering concrete pathways with naturalistic plantings, fixed and movable seating, lighting, and other special features.
