DEFINITION This is a typical scene in Europe, with Siena, Ghent, Luxembourg and Copenhagen to name just a handful of the many cities and smaller towns that have adopted this culture where cars are kept on the perimeter in favor of a more pedestrian-oriented atmosphere within these zones.
Unlike a woonerf where cars shared the street equally with those on foot, pedestrian streets are primarily for pedestrians however often have small roads or space allowed for delivery vehicles, emergency and limited public transport. Sometimes these areas include signs that explain what is allowed and sometimes even pose specific hours for certain modes of transport.
AKAAuto-free zone, pedestrian zone
