DESCRIPTION
PeninsulaInaugurated in 2006, PeninsulaPark is a 780.000 m² public park financed by a Developer (Carvalho Osken) as an environmental compensation for the real estate development it conducted in the peninsula. The firm financed the project, as well as implementation AND maintenance, which makes of Peninsula Park the best maintained park in Rio....
Peninsula is linked with another linear park, inaugurated in 1996, Parque de Educaçao Ambiental Prof. Mello Barreto.
Chacel's objective, in the long term, is to be able to complete the whole loop of the laguna with linear parks.
Prof. Fernando Chacel designed the park primarily as a recuperation area for the local degradated mangrove ecosystem. The park also features restinga ecosystem vegetation, recreational areas and wonderful view points on the laguna. It provides a wonderful outdoor place for the inhabitants of the appartment buildings around.

LESSONS LEARNED
- Private funded maintenance with long term contract is a good warrant of good maintenance of public space
- Environmental compensation from developers can lead to creation of high performance landscapes that the public powers wouldn't have otherwise financed (at least in Brazil).
