DESCRIPTION The Green Alleys competition occurred during January / February 2010. It focused on potential new uses of and within alleys that in combination could add functionality to this City of Seattle’s transportation and ecological systems as well as improving the aesthetic and community-building elements of the City.

The competition was intended to change how Seattle thinks about alleys and to invite creative ideas for making alleys more usable and “kinder” to Puget Sound. Among other things, the competition’s Guiding Principles stressed incorporation of green stormwater infrastructure into the City’s “forgotten spaces” as a method of addressing portions of the city’s runoff before it enters Puget Sound.
