Do others find any conflict between the use of the terms green infrastructure and ecosystem services. if GI is in reality ecosystems, why have we created a new term? What are the key benefits gained by the use of the GI term?

hi all,
l. briney's comment reminded me to remind you all about the international federation of landscape architects (IFLA) 2009 gathering coming up this october in rio de janeiro, brasil. the theme is green infrastructure: high performance landscapes. as one of the selection committee reviewers, i can tell you that from the submissions i saw this is going to be a fantastic assembly with cutting edge work by planners and designers from around the globe. it would be great to have an in-person meetup for any GI wiki participants. follow this thread if you are planning to attend and you'll get a cold cerveja on me!
cheers, nate

I am currently studying for a Masters in Landscape Planning and Management at the University of Manchester, UK. As part of my work I am on placement with The Mersey Forest (www.merseyforest.co.uk). As part of my work here I am producing a report on the functionality of different types of GI. It is hoped that the report will contain several case studies detailing best practice. Where the GI is providing several functions.
I am interested in the interactions between functions of different types of GI. The aim is to establish synergistic functions; I am looking for case study examples of best practice where GI is providing several functions.
The functions I am interested in assessing compatibilty are: 1. Shading from the sun / Moderating the urban heat island effect 2. Evapotranspiration / Moderating the urban heat island effect 3. Habitat for wildlife / Private recreation 4. Corridor for wildlife / Trapping pollutants 5. Reducing pressure on vulnerable landscapes / Public recreation 6. Tourism / Cultural Asset 7. Learning / Noise absorption 8. Corridor for wildlife / Noise absorption 9. Habitat for wildlife / Recreation public 10. Habitat for wildlife / Learning
Please could you include any photographs or information about potential exemplar sites you believe would be useful to the study. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Melissa,
I was thinking this project in Santa Monica, California might work on several levels...urban heat island effect, corridor for wildlife, public recreation, tourism/cultural asset.
http://www01.smgov.net/news/releases/archive/2008/ccs20080512.htm
It was a joint effort between the city and a landscape architect. The city engineer, Neal Shapiro is going to be presenting it as a case study at a stormwater conference in August, 2009.
I hope this is useful for you.

First, I wanted to thank Brice for pointing me over here as a resource. I love the way the wiki is set up and the resources are spot on. Kudos to the group! I look forward to contributing and being a part of the overall effort. I have been blogging about stormwater resources for the last few months at http://www.stormwaterlibrary.com and have been focusing on LID as the main topic of my posts. One of the things that I have become interested in is how demonstration projects can provide a "proof of benefit" and spread LID's implementation as a whole. To this end, I am attempting to put together the most comprehensive database possible of LID projects. I am looking at large case studies like you have presented on the wiki down to smaller single-lot level projects. I would like this to be a searchable database that can be filtered down to usable statistics on LID use by region or can show overall trends in LID as a whole. Most importantly, I would like it to be a pointer to any project that can serve as a demonstration site. The end product would be a living database that can be fed by users to help it grow and stay viable.
Any suggestions on how to track down as many projects as possible would be very helpful and I would love to collaborate on this with as many people as possible. I am excited that Brice invited me over here and I hope to get to know everyone over time.

For a university project my team has to conduct a needs assessment for an area which is around the university campus of the Uni of Liverpool which also comprises a small residential area and a small abandoned, former warehouse area. The focus of this project, however, is lying on finding methods for this needs assessment ( with an obvious Green Infrastructure focus). To be honest, the literature is pretty scarce - so if anyone could help me with some information/literature I would be really delighted.

"Some one else have a go at the rest." i like it. someone also suggested that dross be added as an element, as in we need some amount of leftover bits for our cities to stay dynamic, growing, and changing. would it be 2LS: Liminal Space? how about a little more of description...

"I would define this concept as home zones which my professor refers to at Univesity. Might be a better name and also exists in Switzerland and Austria. " hmm...since woonerf is also a word getting a lot of attention lately, could we just make another element for home zones? or i guess it could be listed as an AKA under woonerf, or the other way around. just don't want to get rid of a term that has some momentum. i'd rather add to the toolbox and acknowledge their similarities. cheers, nate

I'm with Appropedia.org, a wiki focused on sustainability and solutions to poverty - you might say it's about "thrivability". In terms of scope, it's a complete overlap.
We'd love to work with you guys. How is this site going? If you're like us, you'll know how much work is involved in raising the profile. You have great content - could we find a way to get more eyes on it, and help all of us? (And the planet of course!)

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Miguel or Mario. I did hear good things however. Lisa, I was presenting one session about historic preservation and another about community organizing for parks. (We're trying to pass a levy in Seattle, check out the video here: http://keep.seattleparksforall.org/video/video/show?id=2225951:Video:4611) Larch4Green, I hope that's the session you saw!
I think my favorite sessions were the Sustainable Sites Initiative discussions--that and Beth Meyers' piece in Landscape Architecture mag. I kept wondering how we could fuse the notion of aesthetics with the quantifiable metrics of LEED-like lists. Any thoughts?

The soil seems VERY sandy to me. Does anyone know the soil spec? The bark dust for mulch looks like a mistake - and is messy. has any monitoring been done on this system for water quality or water quantity. I am a little reluctant to send this to clients just yet as the pics aren't such good examples of very healthy or robust plantings - anybody have more recent photos? All the same its a great example of a tight squeeze. AND better than pipes.

hi kas,
the final design work was done by KPFF so maybe someone over there has it. i've heard some similar grumbling about the execution over at our office. not sure if they even had an LA involved by the looks of the soil, mulch, and plants. maybe we need a guerrila gardening team to go give it some latenight love. i'll see if i can find out more from some of the folks that were involved in the early work and the CAM (client assistance memo) for DPD (dept. of planning and development).

I think breaking it down into sub-elements would work well. It would be nice to have definitions and examples of just what the different park types are...what makes up the type of park, elements in that park, etc. For example, there are different elements that define a regional park versus a community park or a pocket park and a different set of users for each. It could be helpful for those unfamiliar with the different types of parks as well or for someone trying to refer clients or other consultants towards examples.

Exactly.
Another thing I think is really important when it comes to defining parks is the type, in terms of public, private or semi-private. I think breaking out at least the basic parks will help understand not only the users but the items that might make up that park. That way also it saves people from having to list out every little thing within the boundaries of the park. Typically if you say "sports park" you might have an idea of a thing or two said park would contain but might only need to specifically mention the playground because it, for example, includes some unique feature that differs from the standard playground setup.

"if it is a context for green infrastructure then it cannot simultaneously BE green infrastructure. adding this as an element dilutes the elemental system." after re-reading the discussion, i can see merit in nate's suggestion of JS as a "material resource to be harnessed". but it seems you would have to broaden your definition of system 5 beyond "power, food, and energy".

hi nic,
it looks cool. i haven't used it yet, but am curious as well. i specified a hobbs & hopkins eco-lawn at oxbow park. it grows more slowly, uses less water, and has a mix of other species like yarrow and clover in the grass. it basically gets the normal maintenance by seatle parks. the perimeter unirrigated part of oxbow park was supposed to be a no mow mix (i used a custom list that nancy rottle developed for the cedar river watershed education center), but the contractor was way late, seeding in august and hardly watering. obviously, it didn't really take so they just spread more of the eco-lawn mix when the rain came again. i still get a complaint here and there about the browning in summer and how hard it is to mow on the steep slope behind the amphitheater. duh, that was supposed to be the no mow mix there hehe. i wish parks had made them fix it. i'll send andy sheffer a link to that one you found in case they ever consider getting it right. maybe it can be overseeded? or do you think we'd have to pull out all of what's there and start over? brice, this mix would also be good for those steep parts of beacon mountain!
