GI Functionality Research Project
Mar 4 2009, 9:43 AM EST
I am currently studying for a Masters in Landscape Planning and Management at the University of Manchester, UK. As part of my work I am on placement with The Mersey Forest (www.merseyforest.co.uk). As part of my work here I am producing a report on the functionality of different types of GI. It is hoped that the report will contain several case studies detailing best practice. Where the GI is providing several functions.I am interested in the interactions between functions of different types of GI. The aim is to establish synergistic functions; I am looking for case study examples of best practice where GI is providing several functions. The functions I am interested in assessing compatibilty are: 1. Shading from the sun / Moderating the urban heat island effect 2. Evapotranspiration / Moderating the urban heat island effect 3. Habitat for wildlife / Private recreation 4. Corridor for wildlife / Trapping pollutants 5. Reducing pressure on vulnerable landscapes / Public recreation 6. Tourism / Cultural Asset 7. Learning / Noise absorption 8. Corridor for wildlife / Noise absorption 9. Habitat for wildlife / Recreation public 10. Habitat for wildlife / Learning Please could you include any photographs or information about potential exemplar sites you believe would be useful to the study. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hi Melissa,I was thinking this project in Santa Monica, California might work on several levels...urban heat island effect, corridor for wildlife, public recreation, tourism/cultural asset. http://www01.smgov.net/news/releases/archive/2008/ccs20080512.htm It was a joint effort between the city and a landscape architect. The city engineer, Neal Shapiro is going to be presenting it as a case study at a stormwater conference in August, 2009. I hope this is useful for you.
