GI and Ecosystem Services
Nov 25 2009, 5:22 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 25 2009, 5:22 PM EST
Do others find any conflict between the use of the terms green infrastructure and ecosystem services. if GI is in reality ecosystems, why have we created a new term?
What are the key benefits gained by the use of the GI term?

I understand the terms to be complementary, being the physical framework (designed or otherwise) for delivery of ecosystem services. Interestingly many landscape architects I have spoken to in the UK understand the term 'GI' but go blank at the mention of 'ecosystem services'. A partner of a landscape practice asked me only a few weeks ago if I had made the term 'ecosystem services' up myself as he had never come across it! As I believe ecosystem services underpin the concept of GI it should be a cornerstone of landscape design education both in design schools and in professional life. A greater understanding of both terms would help some in the profession move away from the false opposition of Nature/ Culture. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

This is my view too, we use the phrase that GI is an ecosystems based approach, and we too find that the term is usually more accessible to those without a science background. And as communication is key, using what works in terms of communicatng the idea that we are dealing with a critical infrastructure, (as importnat for how we plan towns and cities as the transport infrastructure) is vital.
