Stuttgart green infrastructure example
Jan 10 2011, 6:59 PM EST
Last semester I did several case studies on how green infrastructure can affect urban ecology and urban climate. Out of the three cities I looked at I think Stuttgart, Germany was the most interesting, and I thought it might be a good example to use on this site. The green infrastructure network in Stuttgart is designed mainly to help with air quality. Stuttgart is in a valley, and so air inversions (a layer of warm air over a layer of cooler air) often form over the city. The inversions can trap and concentrate pollutants within the city. The city government realized how important it was to maintain air flow through the city. They have structured their green infrastructure to channel winds down the surrounding hillsides and through the city center. This involved mapping and preserving the green spaces that are important for generating these winds and connecting them to parks and other green spaces in the inner city. I think it is rare to see a city put this much effort and thought into a green infrastructure system. Stuttgart has been developing and maintaining their system since the 1950's. Do you find this valuable?
