Pattern Language
Jun 20 2007, 9:41 PM EDT
Hi Nate, after your excellent presentation in São Paulo, and looking at your "table of elements" I have to imagine that you are familiar with Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language. I was wondering why you wouldn't refer to your system as a Pattern Language for Green Infrastructure. This would make a lot of sense, considering that Green infrastructure elements will, in real life, interact with Town Elements, Transportation Elements etc. If you have a look at Alexander's pattern for "Green Streets" it will probably help you with definitions. Friends of mine are use pattern languages for describing and designing man-machine interfaces, and I think your layered approach is a very rich extension to the concept of pattern languages. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

good point marc, in my english version of the same talk i show people that there is a rich history of planners and designers developing codes, languages, etc. just as the scientific disciplines have. i show examples from alexander and others, such as kevin lynch and richard halprin, of such attempts to codify the built environment. in truth, alexander and the pattern language folks are fairly proprietary about their system. if you go their website they are very protective of their system. i like what they have done, but i am trying to encourage a more "open source" approach and elements seemed a more neutral metaphor as pattern language is very much identified specifically with alexander and his team. they might even sue us hehe. now that i am back stateside, i'll try to beef up the examples and background info for the elements. i really appreciate your comments and look forward to collaborating with you on this. cheers, nate

Nate, I´m an architect and unfortunately I missed your presentation when you were in Campinas, but I heard about it and found your website. I´m currently working on a postgraduate research that investigates some of Alexander´s patterns in multifamily housing designs in Sao Paulo. Do you have more published work on how your proposed layers work together? Thank you, Raquel

hi raquel,
i've been a bit slow to get all the info from our green infrastructure road show up on the wiki, but eventually more will be here. i was travelling and just changed jobs. here are a few existing or soon to be available resources... our charrette with CDHU was covered in gazeta mercantil last week... http://www.investnews.net/integraNoticia.aspx?Param=33%2c0%2c1%2c642321%2cUIOU i've got a chapter called "growing green infrastructure along urban rivers" in bob france's next book. he's a landscape prof at harvard but i'm not sure what the final title of that book turned out to be. i'll post something about it when that is released later this year. the campinas presentation (with tom von schrader, a civil engineer and founder of SvR) was videorecorded and a DVD is being made by the sponsors of the event, ABAP and SECOVI. this presentation introduces the conceptual background of what green infrastructure is, why it is an important concept now, and then shows many case studies illustrating the layers and elements. i also included some of my observations about opportunities inherent in a focus on the integration of these systems (expression of regional identity, a new modern aesthetic rooted in landscape performance, etc.). please check with ana maria boveiro (head of ABAP chapter in campinas) about the DVD's availability. here is her email: anamaria.boverio@yahoo.com.br on the next trip to brazil, we've been invited to do a similar event for developers and the trade unions in SP and also a workshop involving architects, landscape architects, and civil engineers at UNICAMP. timing will depend on when we can get some projects started there, but maybe this september. hopefully you can participate! thanks for your interest and i look forward to your collaboration. cheers, nate Do you find this valuable? |

Hi Nate, I see what you mean: I was unpleasantly surprised when I had to pay to access the Pattern Language website... I also like the Open Source approach for this, and certainly hope to be able to collaborate! Do you find this valuable? |

5. RE: Pattern Language for green infrastructure

Hi Guys - im doing my master's thesis on using an emergent system to integrate green infrastructure into our urban fabric, and i've been thinking a lot lately about whether Alexander's pattern language might provide some insight into a way to do this. as of now, i feel that the pattern language approach requires a top-down planning technique and i am more interested i localized, self propagating, viral (if you will) regenerative pattern. are you familiar with the Steven Johnson book, Emergence? In any event, I am fascinated by your discussion and look forward to hearing more about this topic, bravo! Do you find this valuable? |
